Battery capacity is a crucial metric that indicates the amount of charge or energy a battery can store. It is commonly measured in Amp-hours (Ah), which represents the amount of charge a battery can deliver in one hour.
The ideal battery capacity can be calculated based on the weight/volume or number of moles of materials in the battery’s electrodes and electrolyte. This calculation considers the moles of available reactants and electrons, determined using Faraday’s constant (F = 96,484.56 C/mol). The total stored coulombs can be calculated using the formula:
Capacity (Ah) = n × F × 1 hour / 3600 sec
Calculating Energy Storage
In addition to capacity, energy storage is a critical parameter for batteries. Energy storage capacity is determined by multiplying the Ah capacity by the nominal battery voltage. The formula for calculating energy capacity is:
Energy Capacity = Ah × Battery Voltage
