The Structure of a PV Module

A bulk silicon PV module is comprised of multiple individual solar cells connected in series to increase power and voltage output. The voltage of a PV module is typically chosen to be compatible with a 12V battery. Due to factors like temperature variations and battery charging requirements, most modules contain 36 solar cells in series, resulting in an open-circuit voltage of around 21V under standard conditions.

Output Characteristics of PV Modules

The number of solar cells in a module determines its voltage output, while the current output depends on the size of the solar cells. Under optimal conditions, the current density from a commercial solar cell ranges from 30 mA/cm2 to 36 mA/cm2. For instance, single crystal solar cells, which are often 15.6 × 15.6 cm2 in size, can provide a total current output of approximately 9 – 10A from a module.

Module Configurations

PV modules for residential or large-scale installations typically consist of either 60 or 72 cells. Although less common, there are also modules with 96 cells. If all cells in a module have identical characteristics and experience the same environmental conditions, they will operate at the same current and voltage levels.

When all cells in a module have similar electrical properties and environmental conditions, the IV curve of the module mirrors that of individual cells but with increased voltage and current levels. The overall IV curve of connected solar cells can be calculated based on the number of cells in series and parallel, saturation current, ideality factor, and other constants.

Cell Mismatch and Fill Factor

Cell mismatch, arising from manufacturing variations or differences in light exposure, can lead to a lower fill factor when cells are combined. While the fill factor remains unchanged for identical cells in parallel or series, variations in cell characteristics can impact overall module performance.

By understanding the structure and characteristics of PV modules, we can optimize their design and maximize energy output in various applications.
